Local Dimming

with over 20 years experience in display industry

Local dimming is a technology used in LED/LCD televisions to enhance contrast ratios and improve picture quality by selectively dimming or brightening different areas of the screen. This technique involves dividing the backlight of the display into multiple zones and controlling the brightness of each zone independently, based on the content being displayed. Here’s some more detailed information about local dimming:

The principle of Local dimming is to work by dynamically adjusting the backlight behind the screen to match the content being displayed. When a scene is predominantly dark, the backlight dims in those areas, enhancing black levels and overall contrast. Conversely, in brighter scenes, the backlight can brighten to maintain detail in highlights.

There are 2 types of Local Dimming:

*Full-array local dimming (FALD): In FALD, the LEDs behind the screen are arranged in a grid or array, and each LED or group of LEDs can be individually controlled. This allows for precise control over brightness levels in different areas of the screen.

*Edge-lit local dimming: In this approach, LEDs are placed along the edges of the display panel. While it’s technically not true local dimming, as there’s no direct control over specific zones, dimming can still occur across sections of the screen to simulate the effect.

Joindisplay’s brand new development TFT LCM uses the Full-array Local Dimming type. With 384 (32X12) pcs of LED chips our new product brings the remarkable contrast ratio 10,000:1 and the Operation Temperature is -40 ℃ to 85 ℃. Size for 12.3″ is now available and 10.1″ will be coming soon.

Benefits of Local Dimming included followed:

*Improved Contrast Ratio: By dimming the backlight in dark areas of the screen, local dimming can significantly enhance contrast ratios, making blacks appear deeper and whites appear brighter.

*Enhanced Picture Quality: With better contrast comes improved picture quality, providing more detail in both dark and bright areas of the image.

*Reduced Light Bleeding: Local dimming can help reduce light bleeding or halo effects around bright objects on dark backgrounds, improving overall image clarity.

Local Dimming technology represents a significant advancement in TFT LCD displays, offering improved picture quality, better contrast, and enhanced viewing experiences, particularly in low-light environments.
